About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
I was inspired by the portrait of Lia seen briefly in D'Eon's house. I wanted to make a more historically accurate version of the design seen in the portrait, so I altered the design by narrowing the sleeves and changing some of the trims. The gown is a 1750s-style robe a la francaise and separate ivory petticoat and stomacher, all in silk taffeta, with ruched self trim. I also made the undergarments, including linen shift, Georgian-style corset, quilted petticoat, and side pocket hoops.
- Personal Thoughts:
- I changed the trims around the neck and front of the dress, and narrowed the sleeves, to make the dress a little more historically accurate. The back piece is about 10 feet wide before pleating to fit. This was my first large-scale Georgian project, and while I'm not 100% thrilled with the fit of the bodice, I'm pretty pleased overall. The thing people seem to find most impressive is that my pocket hoops are actually pockets, reachable through slits in the skirts. People are unfailingly amazed when I whip out my cell phone.
