I wasn't planning on doing Katsucon originally, but since quite a few out of town friends were going to be there, I would just not buy a ticket, and chill around in old costumes. Two weeks before the convention, I got GunBlazeEX addicted to Pokemon again, and we decided on magic up a Pokemon cosplay for the convention.
GunBlazeEX was helping set-up in the Dealer's Room on Thursday, and was having some trouble arranging transportation to get down to the con, so we figured that it would be easiest for him to come down on Wednesday, sleep/finish costumes in my basement, and then I'd drive him up to do set-up on Thursday, and he would just stay in his hotel room starting then.
WEDNESDAY:
Got up relatively early, did some clean up, and then had a magical adventure down Rt. 29 to pick up GunBlazeEX. Despite having to drive in DC, it wasn't too bad, because it was a straight shot to the bus stop. We continued our magical adventure, which included Lush, Chick-fil-A in Silver Spring, the Jo-Ann's superstore, and another Chick-fil-A (no Chick-fil-A stores in NYC, so I had to introduce him). When we got back, I "finished" up Togainu no Chi Shiki, while he worked on trimming his Tidus wig. I also made him a frilly blue garter for Tidus (it was a strip of fabric that I stitched onto UnderArmor shorts, so when he wasn't wearing the shorts, it made the strip of fabric look like a frilly garter).
THURSDAY:
We showed up at the Convention, and helped do set-up. I got massively lost on the way home because the GPS tried to kill me. The trip to the convention took less than an hour; the trip back home took over 2 hours.
FRIDAY:
I had mostly everything packed the night before, so I was ready to go in the morning. I had to take my sister to school to catch her 10 AM class, so I only put on half the costume and no make-up. I ended up getting to the convention a little past 10, and showed up at GunBlazeEX's hotel room to put on the rest of my costume and make-up. We got something to eat at PotBelly's (another place that NYC doesn't have, so that I had to introduce him). Despite our winter jacket/vinyl outfit combo, the weather was gorgeous and we spent a while just exploring the Sim City outside. We even found a pirate boat! The day was pretty laid back, seeing a bunch of awesome friends, meeting awesome new people, and Blankoo being even more awesome and helping take a photoshoot for us later on in the evening.
SATURDAY:
Didn't plan exactly what I was going to wear, but decided to try and fabulous it up in Johnny. Bad idea, because eventually the chaffing around my neck got so bad that I was almost in tears. I had a really nice talk with RedFireFly, and felt a lot better about my life. Eventually around 4, I really couldn't do it anymore, and slowly started on my way to change into Mitsuo, when I ran across an impromptu Persona photoshoot, including my Yukiko. So I rushed to change into costume, and even thought I missed the photoshoot, I played King's Game with them, and had a lot of fun. Eventually I got way hungry, and joined up with my friends for more PotBelly's. They tried to have a magical adventure for alcohol which ended in failure, while GunBlazeEX and I changed back into Togainu no Chi. We sat around being lazy and hanging out until the midnight shoot, which ended in an awful disaster. I felt really bad for Shizuka and RedFireFly who got dragged around even though they were the ones helping me get photos, as well as GunBlazeEX, who despite being a very decent Akira, was totally ignored by everyone at the gathering. Eventually we got too frustrated and while they took group shots, we did our own photos.
SUNDAY:
Easy day for us. Got up early, and into t-shirt and jeans cosplay: Pokemon. We chilled around, packed up stuff, and caught the tailend of the Pokemon photoshoot. Despite our costumes being so last minute, we received quite a few compliments (including from a Hannes cosplayer!). We chilled around some more. Blankoo helped us with another photoshoot, and we even attached some random Team Magma cosplayers who just happened to be around at the time. Later on in the evening, GunBlazeEX and I did some the exploring of the hotel that we never got a chance to, and found some interesting photoshoot locations that we were really upset that we hadn't found beforehand. Eventually he and other NYC friends had to roll out, so we had to break up Shaniqua, C-Dawg and T-Pain :( (Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile). Haha
Convention wasn't too bad. Saturday ended up being way crazier than it should have. Mostly because I wanted to be fabulous and do Johnny. But I learned my lesson. I'm happy that GunBlazeEX was able to put up with my ridiculousness and had a great time overall. Hotel is still fabulous. And I want to just go there sometime, cram all my friends there, and do a billion private photoshoots hahah.
