I hadn't made any costumes in 5 months because of a cross-country move, so a cosplay picnic was all the excuse I needed to get sewing (that and finally getting my sewing area set up). I made this costume in about 10 hours, the day before and of the picnic. The dress is basic quilter's cotton calico...(Read More) from Joann. It's got a subtle leaf pattern in it. The bodice is princess seamed, and arms and neck are finished with hand-made, underturned bias tape. The sleeves and skirt detail are a organza-like fabric (I wanted real organza, but all they had in pink was this similar sheer fabric. It was shinier, and has a wider weave-- not a clue what to call it). Under the skirt, there is a pleated tutu-type of petticoat. It needs more layers to hold up the skirt though. If I wear it again, I'll add some extra. The bloomers are made from a leftover bedsheet I used to make my daughter's pillowcases. It was a better match than the cotton I intended to use, and it already had a finished hem for the elastic channel. The whole thing took under 10 minutes! The hat is made from paper-mache boxes and a scalloped ring of foam-core board. I spray painted them all, then glued on strips of grosgrain ribbon and glued them all together. The wig is a simple, cheap clow wig. I may relax the curls a bit at some point to make it a little more accurate, but it was close enough to make me happy. The hardest part of the entire costume was actually finding pink flats. I paid a LOT more than I meant to, but at least they're adorable and I'll use them for regular wear. They're not quite accurate, but I think they suit the character well (other than the fact that a ballerina would NEVER wear open toed shoes to dance!)
