About this Costume
Construction Details:
I used a Simplicity 1045 (dress B) pattern for the main dress, but with lots of extra embellishments. These include cording and beading along the hem and neckline and hand-sewn rhinestone appliques on the sleeves. The pants underneath the dress were made using a Kwik Sew K3701 pattern with some lovely gold jacquard trim (purchased from shopofembellishments on Etsy) added at the hems. The rhinestones on the sleeves and gorget are hand-sewn. The gorget fastens via two snaps in the back. The belt is made of a metallic fabric with brocade for the "engraved" bit in the middle. It is also fastened via hidden snaps. The jewelry is a mix of hand-crafted and lucky finds at craft shops during a trip to Prince Edward Island. The pants underneath the skirt are secured via drawstring and are made from crushed panne with ribbon trim forming a narrower part near the ankles.
Personal Thoughts:
This is a very underrated manga, so I wanted to cosplay its hero. Since Nakaba's look changes throughout the story, there are plenty of cosplay styles to choose from. I decided to go with her outfit and hairstyle from the finale in volume 13, as I prefer pretty dresses and it seemed more likely to fit comfortably on a plus size cosplayer. It also provided tons of opportunities to embellish the outfit as much as possible, which let me try out some cool new presser feet I got for Christmas! All of the triangular rhinestones are hand sewn, so this took FOREVER to complete! I also experimented with beading and cording sewing machine feet and thus learned a lot of new techniques in the process of completing this cosplay.
