About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
The shirt is a tanktop I sewed using red silky fabric and clear plastic straps. It has thick black string hot glued onto it in a criss-cross pattern.
The cloak is made of black crushed panne fabric with the details made of red crushed panne, red bias tape, and some basic embroidery. I embroidered the design on the red crushed panne accents before sewing them on the back of the cloak. I got some wide belt fabric for the strap holding the cloak in place and then sewed red bias tape to the edges and slid a belt buckle onto it. Since a functional belt did not seem particularly practical to hold the cloak in place, I sewed some snaps onto the edge of the "belt strap" and the interior of the cloak. I also sewed some rather large pockets inside the cloak to make this attire more practical for carrying a phone and wallet around a convention.
The pendant on the tanktop was commissioned from Alia at xODDDOLLx on Etsy. The pants are simple torn leggings that I purchased from Amazon. I made the following props/accessories myself:
- Bound demon arm - I used stretchy spandex fabric to make a glove and then hand sewed strips of linen in an uneven fashion to give it the look of a bandaged arm.
- "Stabby" arm - I used craft foam covered in shiny silver adhesive vinyl to create this. It was a little uncomfortable at first, so I used some spare black crushed panne velvet fabric to make a soft lining. There are snaps attached so that it is easy to put on and remove as needed. Everything in this prop is held together with hot glue.
- Velvet's comb - A friend 3D-printed this for me. Then I picked off the rough edges, sanded it, and painted it to match the comb Velvet carries in the game.
Amazing photo edit by Cassandra Jeanette of Cassandrajeanette.com - Personal Thoughts:
- I made this as a "body positive" version of Velvet Crowe, but I tried to make it as close to the original design as possible. I love Velvet's character and while I originally hated her design, as I played through the game, I realized that it fit personality, especially regarding her anger and her focus on vengeance to the exclusion of all else, better than I thought it would. I considered making Velvet's prologue outfit or one of her extra DLC costumes, but then decided that I wanted to try to make her regular outfit, just in a way that I feel comfortable with. I'm really happy with the result!<br />
This is the first costume where I've ever really focused on props and accessories, so I learned a lot of new cosplay techniques in the process.
