About this Costume

This is still a WIP; I put it together for an office Halloween party but didn't have time for the details. It's made entirely from cotton poplins because even though it's a ballgown, Sally is still a rag doll and it's clearly based on her actual outfit. I hand painted the designs on the patches using Lumiere Jacquard paints. The shoulder straps are gathered tulle with dagged edges. I used Simplicity pattern 5006 for the bodice/corset, no real alterations except for the squiggly patch line in the front. I made a mockup of the front pieces, drew the shape I needed onto it, cut along the line, and then added for seam allowance. I did the same for the skirt--I made a mockup by draping over the petticoats, drew the lines I wanted, and then cut each piece out and added seam allowance on the actual fabric. The petticoat is six layers of gathered purple sparkle tulle with dagged edges with a cheesy spiderweb netting on top, also with dagged edges. I wore this over two shorter petticoats for additional poof--one was lavender to match the actual petticoat and the other is just a short one I use for idol costumes. The tights were bought from Spirit Halloween. The headband is an elastic band with sequins on it, a trim from Joann, with a black ostrich feather attached to it. The necklace (not pictured since the pendant didn't come in time for the party) is a rose pendant from Amazon strung on a transparent black ribbon that ties behind the neck.
n
nStill need to make the rose for the headband and do all the detailwork--hand-sequining the hem of the dress as well as the top and bottom of the bodice, fitting the straps and adding some elastic/a band to go over them to hold in place and doing Sally's prominent stitchwork over each of the real seams. - Personal Thoughts:
- I LOVE Nightmare Before Christmas but had never really thought to be Sally before I saw this design. Jack has always been my favorite but alas, I am not a spindly dude. My department's Halloween party theme this year was Tim Burton, so I sprang for it. I also won the costume contest!! I had a lot of fun with the makeup but would like to perfect it for next time.
