About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
The three things I purchased for this costume were the jewelry, tail, and wings. I wanted those pieces to look the best, and as I had no experience making any of those, I looked to etsy and other stores.
The jewelry is from SiriusWonders on etsy, the wings are from ThePinkPoudo on etsy, and the bunny tail is from Kitten's Playpen.
The dress was an altered nurse pattern. My one regret is making the torso too long for that "baggy" look Komugi has. I may decide to shorten it, but I'll cross that bridge later.
The hat was probably the thing that made me the most nervous. I spent probably close to a year just planning and researching how other cosplayers made theirs, or what would work and feel the best. I finally decided on using a headband as the base to support the ears since the hat alone would not. For the hat I was inspired by sailor's "Dixie Cup" hats, in the sense of how they are patterned out. So I altered a Simplicity pattern of a roman soldier costume (helmet obvi). Cutting it out of worbla first, I molded it over a foam wig head to get a closer shape, and then trimmed in the desired curve I wanted. Layering fleece over that with the ears, (attached, I was determined to not have a seam for the ears) I then put a "nurse cap" front on it. The headband is screwed into the bottom, with wooden dowels feeding into the bottom of the ears, wrapped with wire to make the ears stand up and bendable.
The rest of the costume was the bag, shoes, stockings and prop. All of which were a learning experience but not terribly too difficult.
The prop had casted pieces from resin, and wood. The bag was made from a base of cardboard and covered in pleather, and the shoes were bought at a thrift store and then recovered in pink leather. - Personal Thoughts:
- OH BOY WHERE TO START WITH THIS ONE.
Komugi has been a dream and a work in progress for as long as I can remember. I've had patterns and parts of this costume made and purchased for over the last 5 years.
I decided to finally buckle down and finish Komugi when two other dear friends of mine pitched the idea of a "pink retro magical girl" group for Sakura con 2016. I was absolutely down, and decided to finally finish this costume.
In the photos for the group shots with me are Merrinmari (instagram) as Sakura, and MissTristaMeioh (AC Paradise) as Super Chibi Moon. They are responsible for their own costumes.
This is just a quick summery of everything, but I'll be happy to go into more details if you have any questions! Please ask!
