About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
Top:
nThe top is made of a thicker jersey knit. I dyed it 3 times to achieve the stone/grey color.
n
nDrapes:
nThe drapes started off white. I dyed them with taupe, brown and black to create the tan/taupe shade. I used cotton crinkle gauze fabric. I didn???t even bother hemming the fabric and I tore it rather than cut it..just to give it more of a grungy worn out look.
n
nPants:
nThe pants are made from a raw silk in grey/tan. They have an elastic waist for comfort. The leg ties can extend down for leg wrappings or be worn tied directly under the pant hem.
n
nArm Wraps:
nSame fabric used for the top. They were also dyed to create the correct worn down shade of grey/tan/white. They just wrap around my arms.
n
nBelt and Wrist Cuff:
nThe belt is made of real leather. I dyed them brown and they clasp at the front. A piece of scrap suede wraps around the closure.
nThe Wrist cuff is also real leather, dyed and weaves around my wrist the same way hers appears in the film.
n
nBoots:
nThey started off as regular Ugg rip offs. I created boot covers from boiled wool. They lace up in the back the same way her boots do. I also painted the sole???s beige to look like her boots.
n
nSide Pouch:
nThe pouch is made from canvas and in the exact way it was made in the film. It is lined and works well for carrying my phone, money and safety pins in.
n
nHeadscarf and Goggles:
nThe scarf is just a scrap of linen look fabric. It is wrapped around my head and shoulder the same way hers is with the twist around the head.
nThe goggles started off as an old pair of sunglasses. I made a leather template over them and created the beige portion with felt. I hand stitched the ornamental stitching on.
nThe side light is a blue flashlight, just like hers from the film. Overall, the goggles are one of my favorite parts of the costume.
n
nStaff:
nI made the staff of various parts bought from Home Depot. A wooden dowel is the structural base with various acrylic handles for the shapes at the ends. Lots of craft foam and telephone wire for the handles. I then painted it and rub N buffed it with silver for wear and tear.
nThe straps are real leather and linen scraps to create an authentic look. - Personal Thoughts:
- I am a huge Star Wars fan! So from the moment I saw the teaser images of Rey I knew I wanted to make her outfit.
nAfter watching the movie, I loved the character even more and wanted to recreate Rey???s costume. So I went into hyper drive and fixed up my costume to look more screen accurate.
nI loved Force Awakens and Daisy Ridley???s portrayal of the lonely scavenger. She is finally a Star Wars female that isn???t royalty (that we know) and is headstrong and self sufficient. She also reminds me a great deal of myself, personality wise.
