About this Costume
Construction Details:
It's essentially a 2 in 1 dress. Since the main layer is sheer, I had to make a solid layer underneath so the costume wasn't see-through.
n
nFirst, I constructed a plain, cotton sleeveless underdress with a yoke. There are slits on both sides and only up to my ankles so it's easier to walk while wearing it. The cotton dress closes via hooks and eyes on the side.
n
nFor the main layer, I made another dress out of pleated chiffon and crinkled taffeta. The skirt is made out of the pleated chiffon. The yoke was made from the crinkled taffeta. I gathered it and dropped a few stitches by hand to hold the pleating. I tried to replicate the movie version as much as I could.
n
nThe puff sleeves are made out of the same crinkled taffeta as the yoke and lined with 6 layers of tulle for stiffness. The sheer part of the sleeves are made of crinkle chiffon, slightly ruched. The sleeves are sewn onto both layers of the dress, so the whole dress is just one piece.
n
nAll seams were finished with french seams or overcast stitches. The yoke closes in the front via snaps. The buttons are only decorative and don't actually function.
n
nI dyed the bottom of the dress with RIT dye at first, but it wound up too pink, so I added more red using watered down fabric paint in a spray bottle.
Personal Thoughts:
Crimson Peak was one of my favorite movies of 2015 and I HAD to try my hand at one of the many gorgeous costumes featured in it.
n
nEdith's nightgown is my favorite of her outfits <3 This took a while to make, but I definitely learned a lot and am pretty happy with the end result :)
