About this Costume
Construction Details:
Corset:
nI used little bits of fabrics that color blended together well and kept the tones neutral and brown hue. I used an antique color zipper for the front (even though zippers weren't invented until the early 1900's, Steampunk is an alternate universe during the 1800's, so anything can happen I suppose!)
nThe corset laces up in the back with a tan color ribbon. I used brown cotton crinkle fabric to make custom bias trim and encased the top and bottom edge. The corset is lined a tan cotton fabric.
n
nJacket:
nThe jacket is made from chocolate brown faux leather. This was left over from my Arkham City Harley (the brown stripes down the pant legs.) I used the reverse side of brocade I already had, since the reverse side had a gold/brown hue to it. The front closes with an antique gold closure attached to 2 real leather strips, riveted into the closure.
nThe arm cuffs are made from the brocade lining with the same buttons that ornate the front.
nThe collar has heavy weight interfacing to help them pop for certain looks.
n
nSkirt:
nThe skirt is made of a taffeta that has a top stitched circular design embroidered into it. It consists of 3 tiers in the back to for a bustle type appearance.
nThe front has 2 gather points encased in the seams to create a drape look for the front skirt panel. This can be let down and skirt is all one length, but I wanted more dimension to it.
nThe bottom is edges with hand pleated ruffles made of brown crinkle cotton and black chiffon.
n
nHat:
nThe black top hat was purchased for $10. I made the hat wrap from the same pleather that was used for the belt and pouches. It laces up the front for decor. I made the little decorations around it using existing things lying around and rub and buffed it with bronze paint to give it an antique look.
n
nBelt, Goggles, Shoes, Accessories:
nThe belt is made of pleather. It's sectioned off and looped around antique rings for decor. It closes with an antique circular closure in the front.
nThe pouches are made of the same pleather and other brown vinyl fabrics. Leather string wraps around the front buttons to help hold the pouches shut.
n
nThe goggles were made from toilet paper rolls and craft foam. They were painted black then I used the rub and buff paint style with some gold paint to give it that worn out, antique finish. I used some spare plastic parts for the extenders on the goggles and used the same paint technique.
nReal leather was used as the straps and a buckle in the back so they can be set on the hat or worn.
n
nThe shoes I found at Payless Shoes for $14! They are perfect! I will use them for more Steampunk dresses in the future!
n
nThe only accessories I have for the costume is the Steampunk gun, which was purchased a long while ago, and the antique pocket watch, which was a gift a few years ago at Christmas.
nThe black gloves are ones I had already (Used for my RE6 Ada Wong costume!)
nThe nylons are black stripe style purchased for $10 at a department store.
nThe black choker I had on hand already, as well as the bronze cording for the necklace. The cameo I bought on sale at Michaels a few years ago with the intention of using it for a Steampunk costume.
n
nWig:
nThe wig is Arda's limited seasonal wig, Autumn Forest. I thought the colors complimented the dress and background well, so I chose to go with that one. I was really looking for an excuse to wear this wig for a costume.
Personal Thoughts:
I've taken a real liking to Steampunk fashions and style. A big draw to it is utilizing scrap fabrics I have and using them to create an original design. I have already thrown together one other Steampunk dress using scraps, this is dress 2, also made from a brute of left over fabrics I had in storage. I went with a scavenger look, and all the rustic tones that heavily suggest ???Steampunk???.
nI plan on doing other designs in the near future such as an airship pirate and even a Steampunk Ariel.
