About this Costume

I created every part of the costume with hand-patterning. The black shirt is a two-way stretch knit, and I sandwiched silver piping and a two-way zipper at the center. I bought white twill and lots(!) of liquid dye and after ~5 dye baths, I had the two colors for his pants--that weird off-purple navy-grey. I bought a studded belt. I bought white sneakers and heavily modified them with leather paint, thin black elastic, white piping, and new shoelaces.
The vest was by far the most ridiculous undertaking. First, I made 4+ yards of custom piping out of the off-white stretch vinyl I bought for the vest. This was my first time using a teflon foot and it saved my life. I muslined the shape of the vest to make sure the collar would fold back correctly, then cut it into the various blocked-out pieces in the design. After sandwiching piping between all the necessary front and back pieces, I paneled the bottom blue and yellow pieces and cut out a piece of yellow spandex that would span the entire inside of the vest. At this point, I sandwiched the zipper in there, as well as two silver brads on either side, and sealed everything off. I had some issues making the milliskin lay crisp and flat since it had a lot of resistance from the heavier colors in the rest of the costume (as well as the piping), but overall I'm pleased with the result. I whipped up a wrist brace and had Skwinky spruce up the wig she was so kind to style for me. - Personal Thoughts:
- Kingdom Hearts was (and still is) my first love and the one thing that introduced me to anything made by Japan. I don't know why it took me so long to cosplay it, but I also can't imagine doing it any sooner, before I really knew what I was doing with sewing. Riku is such an important character to me--I really have no other way to describe it than being SO glad I finally did this!!
