Where to start...this costume was a monster!
First, I spent time drafting the pattern and hunting for materials. I started with a princess seam bodice that I have altered to fit me and use as a base for many projects. The whole design is asymmetrical, so I had to create a few mockups, drawing in the seams and cutting them apart.
I created all the flounces from circles or partial circles. The sequin skirt is a 1.5 circle skirt. My partner, Ju-G figured out the white skirt underneath to be two circle skirts, and we box pleated them at the waist. For this design, every other pleat is larger and there are 10 pleats. It's also 3 layers and very heavy!
For the rainbow trim, I custom designed a striped fabric, got it printed from Spoonflower, and cut it into bias tape strips! It was difficult to stretch around the curves without finicky satin puckering, but I can't imagine doing it any other way.
All the stars (and the one apple) are cast in Smoothcast 300. This took many hours of casting, sanding, and painting since I did the casts and much of the sanding for both of us! Ichigo Kitty provided most of the molds, but I did buy the open star mold from an Etsy seller, moldedfromlove. Then I had to drill holes in all the ones from the jewelry (my husband did the tiny ones for me!) and construct the jewelry and belt. That swag star belt is my favorite part of the costume!
I also made the glove from 4-way stretch spandex using the easy hand turkey method. I got lucky in having pink spandex that matched my satin exactly, so I used it for the glove stripe and covering the headband.
Update: I used a glove I bought and made a removable cuff for the glove since I wasn't happy with my original glove.
It's not perfect and I would like to go back and work on it. I ripped out and resewed the bodice so many times that I fear it got stretched out in the bustline. Also, I debated using boning and realize I should have! Most importantly, the sequin skirt does not stand as I would like to. I would like to correct it with larger horsehair braid. - Personal Thoughts:
- Ju-G invited me to do these for the masquerade at SabotenCon. What a big crazy project!
