About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
The entire gown is made out of Satin, with the bodice, collar and sleeves being interfaced. Since this is one of my very first projects I’ve worked on completely alone, the zipper was put in wrong, and in order to fix it I had to hand sew it in. The applique on the front is hand sew, as well as the trim on the sleeves. The ruffles are made out of upholstery fabric.
For one reason or another, the bodice was a lot bigger than it should have been, so a lot of fitting and re-sewing was done in order to make it fit as well as it does now.
Since I did not line the bodice, I had to hem the top and the bottom. The fabric with the interfacing wouldn’t go through my rolled-hem foot, so it was just folded over and sewn down.
The collar is interfaced, and has feathers glued to it. It is then sewn to the front of the bodice, and Velcro-ed to the back.
The petticoat is made of 7 layers of 360-degree circle skirts, totaling to about 45 yards of tulle. All of the layers are set on top of a hoop skirt that I purchased.
The train is 3 layers of tulle with 400 ostrich feathers hot-glued to all 3 layers. I figured since there are only 2 views of the dress, only one of which showing the back, I would take the wing-like shapes of the train and make them more like actual wings and make them completely out of feathers. She is a bird, after all.
The front panel of the skirt is a total of 4 layers of satin. I made the skirt all the way around, and then altered the pattern to apply the petal-like design for each of the layers. The ruffles were then sewn onto the petals. The ruffles were made completely out of strips on the bias of the fabric, then hand gathered.
Most of the work that went into this costume was put in throughout the course of 4+ years that I took of ballet classes just for this specific costume. I had watched princess tutu and was determined to be able to cosplay it on pointe. I got my pointe shoes in May of this year, and am very pleased that I was able to make the costume myself.
Since most of my other costumes I’ve had lots and lots of outside help, I’m very proud to be able to say that the only help I had for this costume was with the zipper.
- Personal Thoughts:
- Possibly the fastest I've ever made a full costume with little to no help! I had tons of fun constructing it and even more fun wearing it!
