Based off of this costume in the Cardcaptor Sakura Illustrations Collection 2.
The dress, gloves, neck tie, shoe covers, and ankle bits were sewn by me and were pretty straightforward to make. The skirt portion of the dress is lined so that the underside is dark red. I bought a dark red petticoat at ReSashay and pinned up the petticoat so that the length was shorter. This also made the skirt portion of the dress a lot more fluffed out. The hat has a single layer of stiff felt in the brim but I might put another layer for extra stiffness. The hat is clipped onto my wig with toupee clips but three clips weren't enough to keep the hat completely steady so I might add more clips. The wooden stars for the hat and the neck tie were from Joanns, and I sanded and painted them gold.
NOW FOR THE WINGS. I used two layers of pink foam that had a wire frame sandwiched between the layers, and then I used spackle to fill in the cracks on the side. After smoothing out the sides, I took an exacto blade and shaved away at that wings so that they had a bat wings look to them. Oddly enough, this wasn't as time consuming of a task as I imagined. The wings were then sealed off with a few layers of Kilz 2 Latex Primer and Sealer. I spray painted them black with a few coats. The wings adhere together to each other with neodymium magnets, but the magnets ended gluing to the actual layer of paint and not the foam so the magnets didn't work as well as I thought. @_@;; Next time I work with magnets I'll change this around... The actual wigs are on my back with a very simple mechanism of two black elastic strips in a X formation that I slipped the ends of the wings to. - Personal Thoughts:
- It took me a little under a year to make this cosplay only because I didn't give myself a strict timeline to finish it and I was feeling hesitant about the construction of the wings. I'm so glad that I finally pushed through to completion because the wings came out pretty good for a first attempt. I forgot to bring the star on my neck to PMX so I hope to get full photos with another rewear.
