Ok! The dress is made from a modified pattern, it's the same one I used for my Vampire Knight gown back in the day.
The main fabric is a 2-tone silk shantung. I went with the manga/artbooks for a color reference. The red was a splurge, so I found less pricey fabrics for the rest. The pinks came from Joanns, and the blue swishy stuff at the hips is from Hamed in NYC. The dress is self-lined at the bodice, then swaps to pink at the waist. The blue swags are partial circles so there isn't bulk at the hips. There is horsehair braid in the hems so it flares out, but I didn't get quite the right look, so I may tweak that. The mesh undershirt was made by doing a rub-off of an existing shirt. The sides and sleeves have French seams, the armholes are overcast. The cuffs and collar are a stretchy black jersey I had in my hoard. The rhinestones and silver crystals came from Aliexpress. I made the earrings with swarovski crystals and fleur de lis findings. The moon charm was made by my friend DizzyLizzy from Insta-morph, it's held on with spirit gum. The pink shawl is just a big piece of organza with a narrow hem all around. I rarely go for colored contacts, but this character calls for them. I'm amazed I got them in quickly! Haha. They're wine red super pinky brand. My foundation is Geisha from Ben Nye, and I'm rocking some big faux lashes. - Personal Thoughts:
- Aaaaaaaaaaaah Moon Dreams! Gonna get a little sappy - this costume means a lot to me. I remember watching Sailor Moon ar age 11 or 12, seeing this character and thinking “whoa, cool dress”. It’s been on my wishlist since before I knew what cosplay was. I put it off a long time because I never thought I had the skills or was skinny enough to pull of Sailor Moon characters. Then, pregnancy hit! I got huge, gaining about 50 lbs. I managed to lose all that weight plus a few pounds, so to celebrate I made this. I’m so happy with how the dress and wig came out, and with how I look in it!
Wig Details
- Styling Notes
- There are lots of progress pics of the wig on my facebook (http://facebook.com/levelupcosplay) I followed a tutorial for the odangos, but started with eggs instead of spheres and added a little foamie at top to change the shape.
- Wig Review
- The chibi is super heavy, but wasn't terrible to work with. I'm a little upset that Arda released a new line of "silky" wigs right after I made this, since those pigtails are super prone to tangles. Oh well. I do love the color, I was worried about too many clashing reds and pinks, but this toned-down pink worked out.
