About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
For the jacket, I worked off of a pattern and adjusted it as needed, which consisted of the center front, collar and cuffs. I also adjusted the waist and princess seams to give me cinched-in illusion that the original art has.
This garment has a lot of hand sewing (AND LOVE) in it, as I wanted to follow standard tailoring techniques. I spent hours basting, ironing and sewing in the lining by hand which in my opinion, made all the difference with this jacket. I added gold trim and crystal roses along the seams to make it extra flashy for the stage.
I went nuts with the trims! There is gold and glitter everywhere! I cast the epaulets out of resin and covered them in different gold trims and chains (and spikes), which includes white fringe I spray painted ombre and added glitter. The epaulets also light up!
The sword was my first prop, so I experimented a lot. The base is made from cardboard, foam, wire, pvc pipe and worbla, which was then primed and painted with acrylic paints.
The shoes were bought and painted with a mixture of acrylic paint and fabric paint which allowed for sturdiness and flexibility. - Personal Thoughts:
- This has been such an amazing costume to work on. I started her almost a year ahead of our planned event and worked on her at my own pace, which allowed me to execute her in a way I can truly be proud of.
Utena is such an important character and became even more so as I made her costume. This cosplay not only represents my love for her and the series, but also my love for the hobby and my friends.
