About this Costume
Construction Details:
Gi: is made from a thick linen with the blue under collar faked by just sewing a blue strip around the top of the collar. I'm considering shortening the sleeves since I think they're a bit too tall. The gi was patterned off my kendo gi and has 2 sets of ties on the inside to keep it closed and accurate.
skirt: pattered after my kendo hakama. They are heavily interfaced to maintain their shape. Pretty accurate to the original hakama except I'm missing the koshi. The inside of the back panel is stabilized with needle board.
yukake: I had to make a few muslin drafts of this but it was made possible with that glove pattern (the one in the black, green, blue and red) and the various yukake tying guides online.
Muneate: vinyl cut out in pure trial and error and then stabilized with very heavy interfacing and tied as traditionally as I could figure out.

Flight deck: I designed them on Illustrator and then printed them using a large scale printing place near my school. I cut them out and glued them with contact cement on to painted corrugated plastic. The board on the arm is attached by a jumbo snap that was attached to the board with plastic epoxy and the other side of the snap was affixed to my sleeve via hand stitching. The one at the waist is tied with cord.
yumi: Bent 2 pieces of PVC with a heat gun. Which was an awful idea. I've since learned how dangerous heating PVC is for your health so please don't do what I did. The yumi is broken into two pieces that connect at the grip for ease of transportation.
quiver: ABS pipe put into a sized fabric sleeve that also has the snaps and hardware to connect it to the back of my gi. The quiver's weight pulls back my gi a lot so the shoulder tie (blanking on the name for it right now) had to be tied really tightly. The quiver also had foam that covered 3/4th of it's area at the mouth. In this foam, I stuck in a lot of fake arrows to make it look like I had more than the 3 "real" ones I was carrying. This also helped me control the position and orientation of how the fletchings were displayed.

Personal Thoughts:
I've been planning this costume for over a year since I was so excited by all the research opportunities to learn about WWII naval stuff and Kyudo. It's still a work in progress but I really hope I can get it to look great!
The hardest part about this was the non fabric parts. I'm not really confident in my prop making skills but this was a great challenge!
