About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
I used the Simplicity Kimono Pattern (4080) to draft each of the three layers of this particular kimono. The outermost layer needed to have a mock up made because I both widened the bottom as well as lengthened the kimono itself so it would be almost a half circle for flair and draping purposes.
rn
rnThe outer kimono is also appliqued using both metallic gold thread and golden yellow embroidery thread - all applique was done before kimono was assembled. Outer kimono is also lined in a gold satin, for that extra sheen. Flat-backed crystals were attached to the kimono for stage purposes.
rn
rnLayers are made from a varying types of dupioni, for the delightful texture, and the flowers are both dupioni (yellow) and sateen (white). The sakura blossoms were airbrushed and stenciled to get their uniform shapes.
rn
rnWhile looking simplistic, the top two kimono layers are lined kimono and matching up all the seams to make it the proper rectangles they are required quite a bit of math. The undermost layer was single-sided, and the satin stitching took at least a week of work to do. (Satin stiching was done freehand on a regular sewing machine). - Personal Thoughts:
- This kimono was created for participating in the World Cosplay Summit 2014, and man was it HUGE! One of my largest creations yet, I really love how the whole costume came together, and all the fabrics are just lovely.
