About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
Specifically for this version of the costume, I took a knife and scissors to the fabric at the skirt, sleeve and sides. The reference picture has one large tear up the skirt and one on the sleeve, but I took some liberties with other rips to make it more noticeable, adding another to the skirt, one to the hem of the shirt, and a few around that look like bear claws. There is a small stitch in the sleeve to keep it held together even though it's ripped open, because otherwise it kept falling off of my arm and generally being somewhat unattractive looking. I also burned areas of the collar and sash to add to the distressing. The paint was a touch I added outside of the reference picture, because having it just ripped was incredibly boring, and I want to be able to use this costume for some intense shoots. The wig is my original Fukawa wig out of it's braids, which made the slight wave in the wig. I then wet the whole wig down and ran a decent amount of got 2 b glued into it, letting it dry to create the strand like look from the reference picture. The stockings are a stretch knit, surged with elastic at the top.
The rest of the details are from my original Fukawa listing:
The uniform itself is made from a bottomweight cotton fabric, which was incredibly hard to work with because it would unravel at every cut. Having not yet bought my serger I was fighting this costume the entire way. All of the white and blue details on the skirt and top are appliqué which, with such an unstable fabric, was a hard time. The skirt itself has nearly four yards of fabric in it and pleated with 1" pleats, I re-did it twice until I was happy with it. Both the top and the skirt are secured and fitted with a zipper.
Choosing a color was a more artistic choice. The artbook seems to suggest that Fukawa's outfit color is a dark brown, while many other sources see it as fully black. However, in the game as well as in in many cosplays, her uniform is blue. I decided to go with a dark navy, a traditional color for many uniforms, and one dark enough that it could reflect the actual game color while not being entirely black.
The details on the front and sleeve of the uniform were hand painted, as they were much to small to properly appliqué onto the fabric. - Personal Thoughts:
- Fukawa is my sweet summer child and, having made her costume a year ago, when I saw the new ripped up design I knew it was the perfect way to give one of my favorite cosplays new life and a viking funeral all at the same time.
