About this Costume

OH THE VELVET. I must have been insane to choose velvet. The corset was, by far, the most fun piece to make. It's canvas with steel boning and busk, and was patterned off of an American Civil War era corset with modifications to the length of the garment and shape of the top and bottom edges. I decided to do the skirt as two separate pieces - a white muslin underskirt and the velvet skirt - to get a little volume. The bolero is fully lined and SO HOT TO WEAR. I opted to go for a torn and dirty look for the whole costume to reflect days of running and fighting through the Columbia. We used charcoal, ashes, dirt, sand, and there's even a few fake bloodstains for good measure. And then, the details: the choker is a custom design I built in Adobe Illustrator and printed onto fabric. The brooch is a beautiful replica from Sanshee. The thimble was a little bit of a puzzle. I ended up having a friend drill two small holes through a thimble so I could string a piece of thin clear elastic, so it fits like a ring on my knuckle. When it's time for a photo, I just bend my pinky down and the illusion is complete!
- Personal Thoughts:
- Elizabeth! I love her, I just love her. Smart and sassy, determined, unbelievably powerful, but sensitive and ready to give her whole heart for what she knows is right.
