Construction Details:

Putting Aurora's dress together was one that took one year, of course with breaks on and off as I tried to figure out to go about making more difficult pieces. The bodice was made with dark turquoise satin, reinforced with twill, and lined with polyester. It is boned with spiral and spring steel boning and has a modesty panel and gold eyelets in the back. It is laced closed with a aqua ribbon, matching the shade of the satin used for the sleeves and peplum. A discontinued Butterick Renaissance wedding gown pattern was used and altered for the bodice and sleeves. A black cotton corset is worn underneath, made from an altered version of the bodice pattern, and is once more boned with spiral and spring steel boning. The collar, made of a white crepe, was of a pattern that was drafted and constantly revised my be. It, too, is reinforced with twill all the way around and has a thick craft interfacing within the points level to the shoulders. The skirt and peplum pattern were drafted by me. The peplum is lined with a thin poly lining, and the skirt is unlined with a total of twelve panels and is about six yards full. A white bridal petticoat was bought, shortened, and made fuller with another 12 or so yards of netting. The shoes are a pair of David's Bridal heels that were dyed to match the bodice. The crown and necklace were purchased from Tommy's Perfect Automail on Etsy, and jewels were added to the former.

Personal Thoughts:

When I became fascinated with Aurora in the spring of last year, 2013, I struggled with "to cosplay her or not to cosplay her." As a girl of mixed race and darker skin, I tend to avoid lighter-haired characters, especially blondes out of fear of not looking good in a wig of that color. Previous to Aurora, the lightest wigs I had word were pink for Madoka and a golden-brown for Taiga Aisaka, both of which I felt okay about. When I decided Aurora was a go, I knew I wanted both outfits, but that the gown was about to go first. In the end, the fabric of the gown would be bought first and the peasant outfit was to be finished first, but the gown was first on my mind. After the struggling to construct the outfit, piece together the accessories, and select a wig on a leap of faith, I've decided that not only am I confident as a blond, but I'm fully confident as Aurora. Within my first ten minuets at a convention as her, I received more praise and flattery than I ever thought possible. Though the praise was only a fraction of what made the cosplay for me, this version of Aurora may very well be one of my favorite cosplays I've done yet.
