Construction Details:

Since this was a big group cosplay, we planned to match all our fabrics and coordinate colors and designs to make sure the group looked cohesive. It was every bit a group effort, as we all worked on our different designs.

The cupcake petticoat I made for Sayaka was made of crinoline, twill tape and ribbon. I found a great tutorial online that guided me through the basics, while relying on my friend Elise (gingerybiscuit) who gave me some great pointers as to what ratio of yardage to use on each layer.

I used the non-shiny side of light pink and white satin to make the skirt, ruffles and top. The ruffles were made with the zigzag method and, after being attached, had to be tacked down by hand on the top. I then added a bow to complete the ensemble and disguise the zipper that closed the top. I also made the bow on her head out of a similar material and attached it to the white headband.

All of our microphones were covered in rhinestones by hand using E6000. We also bought matching shoes with little hearts in the heels, and where their were little indents around the hearts, we attached more rhinestones to tie the costume together.

Personal Thoughts:

I wasn't a huge fan of Maizono's Idol dress from the opening of the game/series, but fell in love with her outfit from the scene of her performing with her other idols, prior to arriving at the school. I had a few friends who were interested in being the idol group with me, and so we all matched fabrics and made it happen!

This was a fun costume to make! One of my first experiences making ruffles and my first time making a petticoat. A learning experience all and all, but in the end, I think I'm more suited to wearing pleather than ruffles and frills.

Styling Notes

I put Sayaka's original wig in a high ponytail, after steaming the wig to detangle it. It was sprayed and back-combed and pinned to achieve the correct amount of height for her idol design. Flyaways were tacked down with hairspray.
