About this Costume

For this costume, I made the coat, staff, and straps on the tunic including the buckles. The coat is faux suede on the outside, and blue satin for the lining and applique on the sleeves. I did all of the sewing by machine except tacking down the lining and sewing on the fur. I made my own custom pattern for both the coat and the applique (as well as for the staff). The staff is three layers of foamboard for the top and bottom with the designs, with a layer of regular foam for the actual gold designs. The pole is PVC pipe notched to fit the foamboard. I glued it all together (after many many hours of cutting it out), then I paper machéd it, sanded, gessoed, sanded more, and then finally spraypainted it gold. I ended up having to fix it by impaling the foamboard with a wooden dowel, bolted to the inside of the PVC. Then I painted the details darker gold, and glued on blue resin jewels. For the big jewel in the middle, I used foam as a base, and covered it in a metallic teal vinyl sticker sheet. I built the foamboard so that there is fishing line coming out of the spikes in the middle, and I made the jewel in two halves, so I tied the fishing line together and then glued the halves of the jewel around it so it has the appearance of floating. The buckles are made out of Premo clay and sewn to the straps. The base tunic was commissioned, and the pants, gloves, and boots are from my closet.
