About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
The dress is a layer of lining, a layer of white silk, and a layer of pink tulle. I was following an artbook reference picture where the dress looked white but was pink in the shadow. Although it doesn't show in the pictures, when the dress folds, the shadows look slightly pink.
I also wanted to customize the dress with "princess details" because the person who makes the princess's clothes would probably add royal details, like jewels. The dress contains 1600 sequins, 800 crystals, and 300 pearls (of different sizes). I put the sequins, crystals, and pearls on strands in the hair, around the hem of the dress
For the large green gems, I decided to use plastic crystals instead of casting resin pieces. I wanted to keep them light and small, rather than large and protruding to keep my version of Emeraude delicate.
The chest piece and gold piece on the drape are made with Worbla. I originally went with foam, but the Worbla could hold the weight of the pearl strands (2.5 pounds). Each strand is attached with jewelry clasps so that I can easily transport the pieces separately.
The flower piece was thrown together the weekend before the con. It contains 150 springs of flowers that were hand-wired together. Added bonus: it kept shedding flowers so I had little petals in my wake wherever I went. :)
- Personal Thoughts:
- I was asked to be part of a Magic Knights group and I was instantly drawn to Princess Emeraude. Her outfit is so light and fluffy, with a lot of room to add details.
Since I was cosplaying in a group who was making the celestial artbook versions of the Magic Knights, I also picked an artbook version. In the reference image, her dress is pale pink (almost white) and it doesn't show the front drape piece. Rather than go with red (from the anime), I decided to keep her dress the entire pale color, including the front piece. I also used manga reference images to make up for the components I couldn't see.
I only ended up wearing this for a couple hours for judging and the photoshoot. I'm hoping to get some more outdoor shots in this dress at some point in the future.
Wig Details
- Styling Notes
- I brushed out the curls to give them a fluffier look, then treated them with conditioner to keep them from tangling. I created strands of pearls and crystals to give the hair a little more dimension than just the wig.
- Wig Review
- The wig isn't very thick and I wish I purchased some additional wefts to sew into the top of the wig.
