Construction Details:

I made this costume for Costume Con 27's Future Fashion Show. The costume, designed by Angelique Trouvere, was inspired by the classic Star Trek reference to the dragons of Berengaria VII.

I used a lovely green/purple silk dupioni that I had in my fabric bin for a few years (I was waiting for the right project to use it). The dress and sleeves are both lined in purple organza. The dress is heavily modified from a pattern and uses buttons and loops down the side for closure. The sleeves connect to the cape via gold trim, which allows for easy movement of the cape. The collar is covered in jewels and gold studs. I already owned the black wig, and I changed out the shoes for a pair of gold painted shoes with leg ties.

This was a really fun costume to make. I was really happy that the designer loved the outfit - that was my main goal in making this!! And on an awesome note, Angelique Trouvere was one of the original Vamiprella costumers way back in the day, and has been making Star Trek and sci-fi costume for years! It was such an awesome experience to meet her ^.^

EDIT: When preparing this costume for Balticon 47, I decided to finally revamp the cape and headdress. I cut out about 75 rows of organza "scales" in four colors (eggplant, aqua, teal, and green) and sewed them onto the back of the cape in an offset scale pattern. Each row is sewn on and folded over to prevent fraying and provide a nice even hem. Every other "scale" is adorned with a Sternocera beetle wing and a rhinestone, with more rhinestones smattered throughout the cape for a dewy and shiny look. The headdress is cut from craft foam and Wondeflex and coated with PlastiDip for a leathery look, then painted gold. The piece is attached to a headband and is decorated with teal rhinestones, Sternocera beetle wings, and teal dyed pheasant feathers. I am much happier with the new cape and headdress now - they are so pretty and I have received so many compliments on them! I was so surprised and humbled to win Best In Show at Balticon! It definitely reaffirmed my skill and ability as a competitor to win in such a prestigious competition.
