About this Costume

"Robin Hood: Men In Tights" is one of my all time favorite movies. Somehow it came up that I should make costumes from it and so I did. I decided to make Marian's gold dinner gown because it is my favorite of all the costumes Amy Yasbeck wears in the movie.
The gold dress fabric is very hard to see in the movie, but appears to be a gold lame weave with black undertones. The closest I could come to this was gold and black confetti dot fabric. It had just the right amount of sparkle and shine to substitute for the woven lame. The swirled sleeve and collar fabric was also impossible to find. In the movie, it appears to be a pale gold guipere lace fabric, which is very expensive and hard to find. I managed to use a pink nylon/rayon mix fabric with swirls on it that I dyed to a dark gold/yellow and overlayed it on top of black/gold lame knit. I was thrilled with the outcome and it works very well with the confetti dot. The swirled overlay on the collar is adorned with about 200 dark blue rhinestones as shown in the movie (though it is hard to see). The dress also has a tan/gold taffeta lining to add body and provide opacity (the confetti dot fabric is quite sheer).
The wig is an Eleora wig, Cathy XL, in Fire Red and works so well for Marian! The crown was purchased on EBay and I fixed the rhinestones on with hot glue. The rhinestones all started all clear gems and I used glass stain and Sharpie markers to achieve the orange and blue colors. I wore some blue satin flats I already owned to complete the "medieval" look for the dress. I was so happy to see how many people recognized me and my Robin - I love that people love this movie!! I am a big Mel Brooks fan and it was so much fun to honor one of his movies.
- Personal Thoughts:
- I'm so hiappeh!
