Construction Details:

Mostly the fabrics used were crepe, crepe-backed-satin, satin, vinyl, and pleather. For the stomach and back robot designs, vinyl was used while the "armrest" pieces on shoulders, armpits and hips are carved foam (paper mached, gesso-ed, painted and glossed with Triple Thick) and velcroed into place. The sleeves themselves were 9 yards of fabric, weighed one pound, and thus I had to create a harness just to hold them in place. The sleeve ribbons have featherlight boning to help retain the shape (Wire doesn't spring back into shape when bent, and boning is lighter). The robot "ears" are pleather with wiring lining (to shape around my tiny head) that can be removed from the headband for washing. Both the hat and thigh tabi socks contain cross-stitch plastic grid to hold shape, but like the boning is flexible. The geta have epoxied vinyl decorations, and satin ribbons sewn on the front. Finally, the layered skirt is attached to an elastic belt underneath the leotard. Nothing is actually sewn to the base leotard, as I intend to reuse it for her other outfits in the future. Hence the millions of layers, also made so I can throw most of it in a washing machine, as well as function (I really wanted to be able to use the restroom)

Personal Thoughts:

Lots more fabric, planning, trial & error, and handsewing went into this than anticipated. In the end though, I was pretty happy with the final result. Actually, I originally made the thigh tabi from vinyl (pleather does not come in gunmetal grey and does not paint well) but as beautiful as they were, I couldn't even walk in them, so I ultimately went with a crepe-satin that came in a shade I could live with. If I couldn't have the plasticy robot look, than I would at least have some shine, as she is a robot.

Styling Notes

It is a very long wig (110 cm) but surprisingly very easy to deal with. It is the softest and smoothest wig I have ever had (and is heat resistant), and the only time I had problems detangling it was after the muggy, pouring rain and awful wind during a photoshoot over AB 2013 weekend. To style it, I used Got2B freeze spray and fabric glue. I tried to get lift and the top bang sections at the squarish angle Horizon's are, but I could only get some lift, so I settled having that sectioned out. Also, I did have a thin layer of straight cut bangs underneath, kind of like hers, which was very convenient to hide both my hairline and wigcap (should the wig slide) and the wig hairline itself.

Wig Review

Overall, I was very in love with this wig. Definitely the sleekest one I have! Under normal circumstances, it does not tangle easily, and detangles quickly, but I brought it out in extreme weather. The only problem I have with it is that it is a bit thin at the top, which can be common with longer wigs--it could be thicker. However, this was not terrible for me, as my robot "ears" and hat on top hide this. A very pretty (perfectly colored--difficult to find long gunmetal grey wigs that aren't silvery-white like Sephiroth's)wig!
