About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
I used the same fabrics I chose for the first draft since I was really happy with the colors I chose.
The corset is made from the wrong side of some cheapo glitter costume satin from Joanns since it was the only fabric I found that was the colors I wanted. (I even looked at Mood in NYC when I traveled there when planning this costume - trust me, these were the only fabrics I was happy with!) It is fully lined and has a layer of twill in the middle for structure. There is plastic boning along each of the seams (and there are 16 panels in the corset, you do the math). It laces up in the back.
The skirt was patterned by me and is actually made from two fabrics, a lavender polyester lining and a lighter colored purple organza I found at SAS. Using the two together ended up giving me the exact color I wanted. The skirt is a very full circle skirt, consisting of 9 panels with approximately 10 yards of 1'' horsehair braid in the hem. I carefully pleated the skirt along the waistline so that the ruffles would lay evenly. There is a double-interfaced waistband and it zips up in the back. The butt bow is made from the same fabrics, with heavy interfacing in the bow and hand-rolled hems on the tails.
The gloves and stockings were patterned by me and made from an amazing purple spandex I found at SAS. The stockings have one seam up the back and have elastic sewn in at the top to help them stay up. The garters were made using hand-made bias tape edged with lettuce-hem ruffles I made myself. (I had searched forever for how to make this kind of hem, never knowing what it was called... fortunately IchigoKitty used it and mentioned it on her page, and my life changed forever, or something). - Personal Thoughts:
- this is a re-make. I first finished this costume in January 2012, but it was pretty terrible so I only wore it once and planned to re-make it when I found a corset pattern that fit. it's most definitely an improvement, but I still think I could do better.
