Construction Details:

Every decision I made about this this outfit could be summed up by saying, "because I'm a crazy person."

I thought this costume was going to be a simple hoodie, skirt and leggings but boy was I wrong! Since it was such a simple design, I really wanted to look at the details of the costume; the artbook came in very handy for this! The artbook told, that Vanellope was supposed to be kind of dirty and thrown together, which was my main reasoning for making the mint/teal colors on her outfit so dark. The hoodie was originally light mint sweatshirt fleece but I died it with a combo of teal, dark green and black because I'm a crazy person. It's fully serged and the hood is lined. I chose to get a thick cording for it to emphasize that her candy is licorice but also to add to the cartoony look.

Because I'm a crazy person, I knew I had to make the accordion pleats on the skirt to give it that Reese's cup look. It was actually easier than I thought it would be and I have a tutorial here on how I did the pleats: http://youtu.be/sRzeDM7vFtI After a long while in the fabric store with a Reese's wrapper as reference, I found that the backside of a suede was the perfect match!

Since the artbook said Vanellope has mis-matched stocking, I really wanted them to look different. And once again, because I'm a crazy person, painting was not going to be an option as I wanted the textures to be very different to show that they are two separate stockings. I also noticed while staring at my artbook, that her stockings are two different mint colors! I would have never noticed this otherwise, but they are indeed different! I wanted one stocking to be shiny (like candy) and the other to be matte; however, do to some terrible customer service at Spandex World, they sent me the wrong fabric and that plan was tossed out the window. While I got them done for my deadline, I plan to redo them in better colors. For me, the mint was just too bright for the dirty look I wanted.

I really wanted to get a sense of candy in the outfit so instead of making the odd style of licorice she has in her hair, I went with a more realistic look. I know, I looked way too much into this but I already said I was a crazy person. I hand sewed all the cording on the licorice piece, which took forever, but i'm really happy with how it came out. I kind of wish I had stuffed it a bit, but oh well!

As for the candy in the hair, some of it is in fact real. I did this mostly because I suck at sculpting (even circles!) but also to really hone in on that candy vibe. I used Modge Podge to cover the candies (gummy bear, Spree, V-Day Hearts) so that they won't become gross after a while. The sprinkles and smaller pieces are made from Model Magic and glued in

Personal Thoughts:

I fell in love with Vanellope's design even before the movie came out but after watching, I knew it was ment to be. We have a similar personality and I love her spunk! I'm slightly convinced that we are the same person. And this is as close as I'll ever get to being a Disney Princess.

Styling Notes

This wig was not originally a ponytail, which made my life more difficult! Most places had run out of ponytail wigs and I knew didn't want a clip on piece. I ended up seam ripping half the wig (because I'm a crazy person), just to resew it facing up to make a nicer ponytail. It was my first time doing this but I think it came out relatively well!
