About this Costume
Construction Details:
Construction-wise, this costume was pretty straightforward--two kimono-type shirts, pants, and a belt/sash thing for the clothing. Since I made this from leftover fabric, my fabric choices aren't the most appropriate. (I thought I was clever to use linen to make it more bearable in the summer, but it didn't work out.)

The headdress is made of craft foam and paper clips. Designs on the sashes are painted on (which ironically took the longest time because the paint wasn't very opaque). The spear is made of PVC pipe, cardboard, and old wig extensions.

For the armored version, I added an additional headdress, pauldrons, and made the Djinn-equip version of Hakuryuu's spear. The headdress was made of craft foam and a feather boa, and is mounted on a circlet made of wire. The pauldrons were made of craft foam and cardboard, covered with expanding foam. The Djinn-equip spear is made with PVC pipe and cardboard, with the design drawn on with hot glue.
Personal Thoughts:
Frankly speaking, I tend not to like Chinese-inspired characters in fiction, as a lot of them seem like sad attempts at diversity. However, I liked the way that the Kou Empire was another whole cultural identity within the world of Magi, and that the series is basically reminiscent of the old Indo-Eurasian exchanges prior to the rise of the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent division of western and eastern identities that are more prevalent today. Also, Hakuryuu is an adorable baby, I hope he lives. ;3;

On the other hand, I can basically recycle this cosplay into Hakuyuu by not having a scar. XD
