About this Costume
Construction Details:
Wow, this costume...don't know where to start. I made it almost a year before I got to wear it because I had a foot injury. Everything had to be patterned from scratch because nothing really exists that looks like this costume lol. I think I started with the main dress first. I had to make a few mock ups before I was happy with the fit. Once it was all ready I appliqued all the gold and pink swirlies on then sewed it all together. The whole dress is lined with duck cloth and satin. The holes on the side are wired to keep any gaping from happening. I fell seamed the whole dress and piped it with gold trim that I made from scratch as well. The belt with the skirt has a ton of hand sewn jewelry findings, a chain made from scratch and coins. I appliqued the whole skirt and in order to keep it light weight I stabilized it with tulle then meticulously cut all the tulle away. The neck, arm, and ankle pieces are all made of vinyl and backed with duck cloth. The little bit of armor I have on is made from foam that is sealed and spray painted. The headpiece in the collage picture is my first attempt. It was made of sculpy but I found that is was too heavy and later had my best friend make me one out of foam core. I had to cut bangs for the wig and add hair wefts to the hair piece. The chain around my head was put together link by link from scratch. The shoes were bought from a friend of mine who has a belly dance shop. The whip was made of paper mache spikes (which my puppy ate while I was making them) and pipe foam covered with fabric. The handle was pvc pipe covered with vinyl and had flowers and feathers added to it.
