Construction Details:

There is about 200+ hours into this costumes. I used this website (http://www.costumersguide.com/whiteQueen.shtml) for reference shots because you can really zoom in on the details. From a first glance it looks like a very plain white dress but when you get up close you realize that there are over 1,000 rhinetones set all over the place all of which I hand glued since I couldn't find the kind you can sew in. Embroidery (which I replaced with bead work). The trim was frayed fabric which I couldn't figure out how to do neatly so I hand knitted eyelash yarn and trimmed it up then hand sewn in with a star sequin every inch. I used a french lace with metallic accents around the v in the bodice The petals were silk daisies that I covered in stained glass paint then nail polish to give the illusion of pearlization. The one set of beaded trim was made of regular round beads and then I found tear drop shaped ones that had the holes punched the wrong way so I had to hand drill each bead a different way. The over skirt is not my favorite fabric. I ordered it from a prom website. It looked really pretty in the picture but when I got it, it felt more like interfacing and I'm afraid that it will fall apart at anytime. Also the snowflakes were too dark. I hand glittered each one but they still seem dark. I'm hoping that as we get closer to winter one of the fabric stores I frequent will get in something better. Otherwise I will get some really nice light weight fabric and hand screen the snowflakes myself. I hemmed the skirt a bit shorter then the movie and omitted the train because I knew I was going to be walking a lot and didn't want to bother with dragging the skirt all over the place. I actually had the wig sitting around, I was going to use if for a unicorn costume but changed my mind. I cut about 8 inches off of it and styled it. I got really lucky with the necklace. Joanne's had an amber rhinestone trim which I sewed pearls around then set the frayed trim to the back with a ribbon. I had made a hoop skirt to go under but had a lot of issues in the process. I finally resorted to buying one online for $12 and felt justified because the amount of money and fustration I saved in the process. I may try again before I submit this to judging at costumecon. I also plan to make a corset and bloomers. I held off on these because of time constraints and weather (Otakon tends to be a bit hot and the last time I wore a real corset in the summer I threw-up and almost passed out) Overall I am very proud of this costume. The Hatter is my friend Jay. He put a lot of work into his costume as well. The hat alone took him 40 hours. If you look closely you can see that he hand punched holes in it to look like lace (which is movie accurate). The vest was patch worked together. The only thing he didn't make was his pants. I think he still plans on embroidering the flower to his pants and he wants to dull the color of the wig and fluff it more. Eventually our friend Amanda will have a Um finished as well. /hope you enjoy our hard work :)
