About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
Although I'm not in the Rebel Legion, the dress is constructed to their standards since if I was going to make it anyway, I figured I'd better consult the experts. I also wanted to avoid it looking like the cheapo Halloween costume version which is so commonly seen. Since the Legion requires that the tunic have no shoulder seams or seams in the front or back, I skipped over the Simplicity Star Wars patterns and made a T-tunic pattern instead (similar to what you'd use for a Christmas pageant angel or something similar), which was a much better place to start. The fabric is a light, slightly stretchy poly-blend, which is double-layed both to give it some weight and so make sure its not completely see-though. The entire thing is one-peice and slips over the head with no zippers or other closures, and it is SO COMFY, kind of like wearing pajamas. The partial hood is made from a rectangle piece and the high neck closes with snaps at the back of the neck. I bought the belt off of eBay, which is a white faux matte leather and real metal accents, which closes in the back with velcro. For boots I used a pair of white matte go-go boots so I'd have a bit of a heel as I have short legs and need a bit of height in that department, and the storm trooper blaster is a model kit which Sketch assembled and painted. For her iconic hairstyle, the first time I wore this in 2011 I experimented using my real hair as a base and adding the buns on as clip-on pieces, but that did not work well at all and the proportions ended up being all wrong. When I dusted this costume off in 2016, I decided to bite the bullet and just commission My Favorite Obsession to make me the wig, as she made them with the proper non-braided style. I was really happy I decided to do it that way, as it came out perfectly!
- Personal Thoughts:
- I've always loved Leia, so when Sketch decided to be Han Solo for Dragon*Con, I agreed to be the cinnabon-haired princess. I decided to do the classic "senatorial" version of her costume from A New Hope even though Sketch was doing the Empire Strikes Back version of Han because I loved the hairstyle and it was simpler than the Cloud City outfit, which is my favorite of Leia's Empire designs. I also liked being able to carry the storm trooper blaster with it! .
