This costume had several strange components to put together, such as a diagonal pleated skirt and breast armor. For the skirt, I made a basic pleated skirt, put it on, marked the diagonal line, cut it, added the white bias tape along the bottom, and then ironed the pleats back in place. I made the flaps on the skirt out of custom dyed sateen. I made the belts out of navy blue vinyl with buckles I salvaged from a bag from a thrift shop.
The cape was probably my favorite part of the costume. To make it I basically used half of a circle skirt pattern and then added the collar with the gold piping. I embroidered the pattern of the clasp with gold thread using a tight zigzag stitch.
I used vinyl to make the breast armor piece. All the ruffles, gold bias tape, and gold piping on this costume had to be hand made because I couldn’t find any that looked just the way I wanted.
The boot covers were likely the most time consuming piece to make. I recycled my Miyako boots for this, folding them over and covering them with a blue knit fabric. Once that was done, I had to cut the triangles into the front of the boots and add the gold bias tape, mitering corners and making sure it fit around the top in one solid piece.
