About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
Costume was constructed out of 7 yards of two slightly different shades of rosey pink dupioni silk & 4 yards of violet casa satin. The skirts required so much hand ruffling. The skirts & top were drafted and the corset was made from an Edwardian underbust pattern which was admittedly kind of insane. 14 panels, no instructions, no guidelines. Just numbered panels. The busk is ten inches and all of the boning is flat steel. Due to the delicate nature of the dupioni silk the front panel had to be turned into two pieces instead of the 6 tiny little panels found in the pattern and reinforced with fusible interfacing. Corset is also lined with this awful kitschy skull & heart fabric.
- Personal Thoughts:
- Kurzeshaar & I spent a month's worth of weekends turning her living room into a sweat shop while watching Disney movies, musicals, DOWNFALL -- which is the most uncomfortable movie in existence -- and drinking lots of coffee while joking about the worst ideas for Disney adaptations ever like 'Disney's Oedipus' -- you know you can picture a chorus line of singing/dancing sphinxes. I may have Tweeted most of this ridiculously as it happened. In any case ...
This is the froofiest costume I've ever made. So much pink and so many ruffles. I had to turn it into Whore Canyon with my late 19th century courtesan makeup, of course, and the fact that I had 'the knights' taped in to place with double stick tape. I've made a number of corsets over the years but this was the most complex. I only regret I wasn't able to properly tight-lace it due to needing mobility on stage for the masquerade. Also, the collar makes me feel like a Dilophosaurus. Heelllloooo Newman.
