About this Costume
Construction Details:
The "kimono" is made from a super stretchy woven cotton that looks like wool crepe. I used a dress pattern with set-in sleeves and darts and modified it. I have a very slight frame so a loose, baggy fit like Kagero actually wears would swallow me whole. The neck band is fake and is tacked on on top of the dress base so it stays in place. The sleeves are also a faked-out double layer, and there is an invisible zipper up the back to get me into it. The fabric for the Obi was made by myself and my friend Binkx - we purchased striped fabric, cut it into strips, and resewed it together to make the checkered pattern. The bow in the back is my baby. It's a handmade buckram form that I covered in the obi fabric. The headband was made by sewing piping from my kimono fabric and then weaving it together. Tassels at the ends are also handmade.
Personal Thoughts:
This costume is thankfully very comfortable and easy to move around in. It can get a bit drafty though... thank the gods for dance tights and booty shorts! Also for being able to wear flat shoes with this outfit.
