About this Prop
- Construction Details:
-
Made out of half inch green styrofoam insulation, I drafted out the sword 3 or 4 times with cardboard before feeling happy enough to trace it onto the foam and cut it out. The entire sword is actually 3 pieces - I cut out 2 copies of the handle and glued them together, with a slot to slide the blade into. I then hand sanded down some of the edges to make them rounded and smooth, since there is some shaping to the handle to make it easier to grip. The parts that needed to be built up were done with small pieces of Wonderflex, then I covered the entire thing. I then painted it with a sponge, aged it slightly with black paint around the edges of the blade (to make it look like it had the edging it was supposed to, since I ran out of time and patience), and sealed it all with a spray-on permanent fixative. It's incredibly lightweight which is a huge bonus, and even though the original foam was somewhat flexible, thankfully the Wonderflex made it much more stiff!
- Personal Thoughts:
- My first prop!! Well, my first -real- prop. I'm so proud. Except the part when I got covered in dust and little parts that just randomly came off while I was trying to sand. That wasn't cool.
