About this Costume

So because this was made for the parade at WCS, I made it out of natural fabrics. The gray parts and bows are silk, the black shirt is cotton, and the white shirt is a light wool. I had a pattern for a wide-collared jacket that I modified, and otherwise drafted everything myself.
This costume can easily go pretty "school uniform," but my preference was to steer away from that by using more decorative fabrics and trims, and the Anna Sui tights that I'd seen on a couple other Homuras. I'd also made my own bias tape using a black cotton with a gray design on it.
I decided to make both her default headband and the ribbon one from episode 12. The default started as a plain black satin headband that I painted dark grey, and then I added some black rhinestones. The ribbon headband has a black base headband that the ribbon was glued to, with a starched bow added later. The bow does not survive suitcases, though, so needs to be re-starched everytime I wear it.
For the soul gem, I'd found a clear, metal-backed diamond gem in the fabric district that was dyed in microwave with rit dye, which kind of toasted the back of the gem and gave it a really cool look (but might kill a microwave). Then I'd sculpted a base for it out of clay that Ashley then cast for me in latex. I really love the end result, but may end up redoing it if I can find a gem in a closer shape to what I want! - Personal Thoughts:
- So much thanks to other Homuras like Crystalike and Space Invader for sharing some of their sources and techniques, and to Binx for sharing her Kyuubey.
Also, thanks to Goldy for showing us around his workshop and loaning out his Madoka props. The shield was really nicely done and I only wish I'd gotten more photos with it!
Despite its problems, I really like this costume.

- Styling Notes
- I loved the color of the wig, but it needed a bit of work, which Ashley was awesome enough to do at the last minute. She trimmed the bangs and sides, and took quite a few inches off the back.
