I loved Madoka, and Homura's character was just so tragic and beautiful, I just had to cosplay her! And I've never really pushed myself to cosplay from a really recent show so I was really excited to do this and planned/patterned things out way in advance. But...things like graduation and moving back home and jetlag and family chores got in the way so.... ...I started this SO late. Like right before Fanime... First I did the soul gem out of a plastic gem from Joann Fabrics "Big Bag of Bling", hand molded Sculpey clay baked in the oven. Then I did the shield weapon thing. Made from a plain plastic plate with craft foam glued to the top, then with the design burned into it with the tip of a hot glue gun. the round parts are an Easter egg, and big gems. Some smal bits of dura-lar plastic were also used in the making. Sprayed with silver spraypaint, then weathered with black paint, then with more silver marker on top. A bit of gold marker was used for the round parts. The base outfit was made from white curtain material. Black bias tape was added to the bottom and the ends of the strangely cut sleeves. There is an invisible zipper in the front. The short black sleeves were made separately because I didn't have a long black sleeved shirt to wear under the white shirt and I would have overheated. The black collar is completely drafted by Chiyann! I had no idea how to do it and was seriously about to just eff it and tuck fabric into my collar but she did an amazing last minute job in patterning a shirt that zips up, with the crazy collar that turns into a sailor collar. *3* This would never have happened without her help!!! The gray fabric is some strange tw0-tone fabric from Hancock fabrics. one side is gray, the other side is pink/purple/brown so I used that side for the ribbons. :) The ribbons are like bias tape, just ironed into double folded bias tape that I sewed down. The ends of the back ribbon are painted with black nail polish. The skirt was made of the gray/purple pink brown fabric too. It was my first pleated skirt. After studying enough tutorials I think I got the gist of it and just went for it. ...It's a big big so I had to safety pin the inside, but I'll fix that for the next time I wear homura! A lot of this costume was just time consuming, not hard. I added some more details to this costume, like on the bottom of the skirt, the collar, and a studded headband as opposed to a simply painted one. I believe that Puella Magi should have lace and ruffles and frills, so that was why I went with shiny fabric (not satin) and some more lace things. The tights I bought are from Zappos.com and are also available at Sockdreams.com They're the Anna Sui brand, and come with the diamond design on the side already. It was a tossup between painting diamonds on tights as I wore them for 10 hours, or just forking over the money for the tights. BTW, the tights are sweater tights, so they're a bit thick. I'm wearing the M/L size. Overall this costume was pretty good for a rush job, there's always improvements to be done on any costume, and I love Madoka so I will definitely be wearing this again!
