About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
Dress base is comprised of three layers of circle skirts and lined princess seamed boned bodice. I used casa satin and chiffon for this dress, and I'll just say this costume has an crazy amount of fabric. As a person who doesn't make large dresses, this was a very different project! I purposely made the bodice a little longer to help prevent loosing my waist. True empire waist dresses are not flattering on me so I tried to work around that factor of the design. For the designs on the bodice I did a lot of bead and hand sewing work. The circles are the same satin as the dress, then the circles are satin stitched. The tailor's chalk I used didn't like the satin so I put a thin layer of metallic white fabric paint between the stitching to mask it. I then hand beaded the outlines created by the satin stitching to make the lines pop a little more. That alone took 8hrs of tedious work. For the rest I just hand sewed on small and large pearls, and used bridal trim for the lines and "u" shapes. I also found some really pretty rhinestone trim and used that break up the lines and "u" shapes. After all the layers and beading the dress was WAY to heaving to stay up on its own so I had to add clear straps. The bow in the back is made of chiffon as well and just clips on in the back. All the edges of the skirt and bow are just rolled hems.
Sleeves are just lots of layers of craft foam. Then painted white and metallic pearl. Clear elastic keep them up.
Earrings purchased at walmart. Moon gem I got forever ago. Bracelet is the small pears as the dress. I even got cute shoes that had rhinestones on them too! - Personal Thoughts:
- LOTS AND LOTS OF FABRIC. I'm a blob of white!
I have been wanting to make the manga version of Serenity FOR YEARS. I never felt like I could make this dress to my satisfaction until the last year or so. I'm so glad I did. While it was an utter pain to walk anywhere in this dress, it rather comfy to wear. It was a dream come true finally making this. I can't believe it hasn't been since 2007 that I have cosplayed as SM/Serenity/Usagi. I love Sailor Moon so much, and this costume has renewed my desire to do more costumes from the series again.
