About this Costume
Construction Details:
This costume was a bit of a last minute decision & probably one of the fastest sewing projects to date -- seriously, sewn in about 3 hours two days before the con. Unfortunately, I had a bit of an issue where the fabric was concerned. Initially I had wanted to construct it entirely out of layers of ivory chiffon, however the chiffon I ordered online didn't arrive until the weekend of AUSA so I had to make a trip to G Street fabrics to procure an alternative. Courtesy of Halloween, the store was depleted of all ivory chiffon so I opted to use voile which turned into a disaster because it simply wouldn't drape correctly. Ran to JoAnn's the following day and bought yet another batch of ivory chiffon. Ultimately, ended up opting to simply line it with the remaining ivory silk crepe left over from Satine b/c obviously my life needs yet even more ivory silk crepe -- kill me now. So in the end 6 yards of ivory chiffon & 3 yards of ivory silk crepe went into this. Seams are finished w/ an overlock stich and sleeves & hem are rolled. Ribbons were hand sewn on and accented w/ freshwater pearls. The armlets are made from ivory mesh lace left over from Alucard. Corset was purchased b/c I really didn't feel like fooling around w/ steel boning another corset for this.
Personal Thoughts:
Despite having previously made a version of Charlotte, I always preferred this outfit over the other. It captures the essence of the Gothic ingenue more so in my opinion, though honestly the film version of Charlotte does little for me and I much prefer her unnamed character in the novel. She actually has a purpose and a personality, whereas in the film she's left alone for five minutes and Carmilla kills her. Granted, women in vampire series tend to just be fodder or the catalyst.
