About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
The dress started off as a mid-calf length strapless dress, which is what the pattern was made for. I took it in and left out of the boning, added makeshift loops for the clear straps, and shortened it. The outside is made from black casa satin while the inside lining is made from navy blue batiste cotton. I couldn't find black batiste cotton and you don't really see the inside anyway so I thought it would be fine. I refused to put in black polyester lining because I don't like the feel of polyester, or how difficult it is to work with.
The waist cincher is free drafted and consists of three layers: two layers of white casa satin and one layer of white twill. Two different styles of black Venice lace was used for the two borders. Eight grommets were hammered into the back; the cincher closes with a white satin ribbon tie. I love the lace but I didn't realize that the dye would rub off onto the white satin. I spent a good couple of hours with Oxiclean spray and a Tide bleach pen trying to get out as much of the dye as I could. I didn't completely succeed but the dye doesn't really show up in pictures either.
I got lazy on the hat and just tied a white lace ribbon around a black mini top hat. I still have enough of the Venice lace used for the upper border of the cincher so I will probably go back and make a proper hat ribbon before I wear it next. Gloves were purchased off of eBay and have a pretty embroidered rose pattern to them. Nails are fake, painted in a color called Pixel Pretty, and the rhinestones added. AZ 2010 was most crossplay except for Miku so I had to use temporary press on nails; otherwise Byakuya and Syaoran would have also had turquoise nails.
There are many images of Miku's Magnet outfit but most of them are from the waist up. From the three or four images that show her shoes, I chose the one that has her wearing black tights and black ballerina flats. I may find myself a nice pair of heels later, but I liked that image the best.
The construction of my Magnet headphones is on a separate entry.
Photos at Animazement 2010 by Jayce. - Personal Thoughts:
- I was looking at my Kaito Magnet headphones and all my Kaito cosplays one day. I like Kaito, but it hit me that I just don't make a very good Kaito. I still wanted to cosplay from Vocaloid and Magnet however. I also needed a cocktail dress to wear to go the Swallowtail Butler Cafe in Tokyo. So I whipped up Miku's dress. It's plain black satin which makes it very versatile for different occassions.
