About this Costume
Construction Details:
Being a ballet dancer myself, of course I couldn't wait to do Princess Tutu! In addition, Swan Lake has always been my very favorite ballet, so Tutu's Swan Lake variant was my obvious choice. I did not go for perfect accuracy - indeed, the reference image is only a simple cell, devoid of any fine details - and I wanted to create a costume with a little more resemblance to an actual Odette tutu. The biggest difference is the tutu overlay. I wasn't impressed with some of the more 'accurate' overlays that past cosplayers had done, so I improvised and went for something more elegant. The tutu is a pre-made, bought tutu. Making a good pancake tutu can be quite difficult, so I went the easy route. I do hope to make my very own tutu some day, however! The bodice is a McCalls bridal pattern, and the bodice design was entirely hand painted and studded with crystals and glitter. It's actually quite beautiful and really catches the light, but you can never really see it well in photos. Because of time constraints, my mother and I opted to use a cheaper boning, which ended up almost ruining the entire bodice! The two-part overlay is edged in glitter and studded with crystals. It was cut to resemble feathers and it was much more difficult to make than expected. The shoes are Grishko 2007s. I am an actual ballet dancer.
