About this Costume
Construction Details:
The dark blue material is velvet and is death to wear in the heat. The lighter blue is a fabric called "Silkies" which I have never heard of before. I found it in an outlet fabric store in San Fran and bought the remaining 4.5 yards. The black in a soft rayon blend and the yellow stripes are 60+ feet of yellow ribbon that I sewed/ironed on myself. There are about 24 silver buttons on the outfit that had to match and 12 black ones for the boots. The top hat was found at Party City and was made taller using fun foam and was covered. The eyepatch was made by me using leather for the patch and the straps. The boots were bought at a thrift store and cut down and modified. None of the pictures show it properly, but I do have the scallops on the sides of the boots as well as the buttons. The gloves I already had and the rings and wig were bought on Ebay. The cane is made out of an old golf club and the skull is a shift knob. Everything else was made by me with help from my mom. Every picture I found of the outfit looked as if the draping on the back looked puffy, not flat. So I decided to add a bustle underneath it and I was happy with the result. The bustle was made by us as well. The train is about 9-10' long and drags all over the place so I added a loop halfway through it to hold it up, much like what they do on wedding dresses. The roping around the jacket was either glued or hand-stitched, depending on where it was. The sock holders snap in the back for a tight hold and have those suspender thingies to hold the socks. There are certain parts that could have been made cleaner but overall I'm really happy with the result. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
