I love Ciel's choice of clothing. I plan to do more of his costumes. The reason I did this one was because I had all of the fabric in my closet. Everything except the hat, shoes, Phantomhive brooch, socks, and the riding crop was made by me.
The original image is dark to the point that it implies the outfit is completely black (except for some details). I thought black was a bit too harsh, and I have navy blue twill and black and red reversible taffeta in my closet. I added these two, plus what remained of a gorgeous black brocade, together and made my own color variation of the outfit. The taffeta gives it a very iridescent color and makes the outfit pop a bit. The coat was made from a Vogue coat pattern and cut short; the brocade is added in two ruffled layers to the hem. It's not very clear in the image whether the brocade is actually attached to the coat or whether it's part of the chair Ciel sits on. I like it attached though. The shorts are made of the same patterns and from a Simplicity pattern then cuffed up. There was 14 large silver buttons total on the coat; there are 8 small silver buttons on the coat sleeves and 6 on the cuffs of the shorts.
There are a total of six black silk roses, three on the brooch and three in the hat. The brooch was made by me, stringing together faux pearls and crystals. The Phantomhive brooch was purchased off of eBay.
The hat was purchased off eBay as was the riding crop (eBay is becoming one of my first stops for cosplay supplies). The hat was a standard Mad Hatter top hat; I left the grosgrain ribbon on but took off the colored feathers. I added the black/red taffeta ribbon made from the remains of my fabric. The roses are bent and tucked into the grosgrain ribbon while the coque tail feathers are tucked into the taffeta ribbon.
The shoes are typical Mudd oxfords with the laces removed and saved for other cosplays. Navy blue satin ribbon was cut and used as laces instead. The socks are typical cotton knee highs. The sock holders (cause I don't know what they are called) are made from the taffeta remains, black elastic, and crimps. They are a bit tight but there's no issue of them falling down.
This was an overall easy costume. It was worn to Animania at Cary Towne Center in Cary, NC on July 12th, 2009.
