About this Costume
Construction Details:
I have two versions of this costume- The first one I constructed in 2009. The second one in 2011. Basic materials are the same on both versions and some of the pieces from my first were reused on my second. The armor is made of a combination of Sintra (a thermoplastic) and several thicknesses of craft foam. My 2009 version was my first time working with those materials to make armor so it had it's issues. The second time making this armor went a little easier and I took a different approach to the breastplate, which is now craft foam over a wonderflex base. It's much easier to put on and lighter. I also made the side panels collapsable for the sake of easier travel. The sword is several pieces of balsa wood glued together which I sanded to shape with hand files and sand paper. Everything on it was made by me, including the wig styling and Excalibur, as well as the patterning for the fabric parts. The back plate is from the 2009 version and needs replacing before I wear it again. In the future I'd like to keep improving on it, but regardless of it's problems, it's my favorite costume and a continual labor of love.

Personal Thoughts:
This was my first attempt at a big armor project back in 2009. In the spring of that year I was going to take a hiatus from cosplaying, but after watching Fate/Stay Night and really liking Saber's character, I just had to make this costume. I debuted the costume after a month and a half of work at Fanime that year. In 2011 it was time to repair and remake most of the costume for Anime Expo where I had plans to cosplay with a number of my friends as Fate characters. Every time I've worn this costume, it's been amazing and despite it's flaws, it's my favorite costume I've ever made.
