About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
I was inspired by the gorgeous iridescent blue taffeta which I found as a remnant; it's possibly my favourite colour ever and I wish I could find more of that shade. The bustle involves several layers of ruffled blue taffeta and bronze organza, with peacock feathers peeking out from between the layers. The skirt fabric was another awesome find; not cheap but perfect as I wanted something stripy and interesting. The corset and armwarmer fabric was another remnant that came pre-embroidered; I'd been planning on using leather but this was too cool to pass up. The buttons are decorative; the armwarmers fasten with snaps for ease of wear. The blouse was a Goodwill find, tea-dyed, taken completely apart and remade into a new design. I used pre-stiffened lace from a tote bag to make the lace hat over a wire frame and added a handmade tsumami (traditional Japanese fabric folding) flower.
- Personal Thoughts:
- I've loved steampunk long before it exploded in popularity, but seeing everybody's awesome outfits got me moving on making my own. I am planning on making a matching parasol to complete the ensemble.
