Construction Details:

Completely finished for Katsucon 2002. Since I learned to wear kimono, I wanted this to be as authentic as possible. The obi is worn in the drum bow style. I made everything except for the shoes, tabi socks and obi cord, which are all from my kimono collection.

The kimono, jacket and obi are made with rayon suiting fabric. The underkimono and chinese ball buttons/ties on the jacket are made of cotton broadcloth. The obi is interlined with a heavyweight cotton to stiffen it up. I figured the ball buttons would be the most historically accurate than regular fabric colored ones. There is a scarf tucked into the obi, and I'm pretty sure that is actually a lightweight silk satin.

The jacket was actually the most perplexing piece of the outfit since I couldn't find an actual historical reference for it. It wasn't a michiyuki coat, and it wasn't a haori. So from what I gleaned from japanese clothing construction in general, I settled on a happi coat and added the apron. The sleeves on the jacket are also shaped traditionally by sewing, at an angle, the bottom edge of a standard kimono sleeve and leaving the excess tucked. Kimono construction generally leaves any "excess" seams hand-tacked inside the kimono so it can be adjusted/reused later. Waste not, want not! ^_^

I made the fox-lady so I could torment Kenshin cosplayers, particularly a friend of mine who looks JUST like him. For real! XD LOL But Megumi is awesome!

Styling Notes

Bangs were cut by my hairdresser. (At the time I didn't trust myself with scissors!) I finished them by curling them under a blowdryer. I didn't need to do anything else to it except snip a bit in the front for the tendrils.
