About this Costume
Construction Details:
I based my costume off the FMV design of Reina from the Final Fantasy Anthology release of the game, which closely resembles the original drawings of her by Yoshitaka Amano. The wrap skirt is made of three layers: the first is a cotton/synthetic blend opaque miniskirt which I patterned off one of my summer skirts. The second is a sheer material which is knife pleated and trimmed with gold fringe. I also hand-beaded the box design all the way around the bottom edge and the vines which climb up her skirt with individual gold beads. I spent many hours with those dang beads. The final layer is a sash made from brocade and is accented with a rope of beads I hand made. The leftover beads I made into earrings.

The top is a modified purple leotard which is trimmed with gold and fastened in the back with buttons I ripped off an old dress. It attaches at the neck with a necklace clasp. The sleeve "wings" are made from the same fabric as the overskirt. The collar, gauntlets, and headpieces are made from Wonderflex, and decorated with gold wire and glass beads. The shoes I bought white and painted gold, and attached wire and beads to them as well.

A sword from a Halloween store rounds this costume out.
Personal Thoughts:
I played FF5 in 1999 when it came out on the original PSX as part of the Final Fantasy Anthology, and absolutely loved it - bad translation and all. I'd wanted to cosplay one of the FF5 ladies for a while, and although Faris is my favorite character, when I found out Natalie was planning on making Faris, I just had to make Reina to match her!
