About this Costume
Construction Details:
With Yuan being my one of my favorite male characters in Tales of Symphonia, I just had to make his costume. Of course, it turned out to be much more difficult than previously imagined. Still, I'm glad I went through with it and I'm happy with the results. All the pieces except for the white shirt and pants were made frome self-designed patterns. I chose a quilt-like material to give the pieces a bit more volume, and I edged everything with gold bias tape. The costume comprises of two main parts, the top, which is a combination of a vest and a t-shirt. And the the bottom, which is something akin to a skirt. Then there are the arm and shin guards. The costume itself was fairly simple, putting everything together and adding the gold bias tape is a different story. I also procrastinated a little so at the end some of the parts were a little bit rushed. Overall, I like how it came out. The prop is made out of two layers of compressed cardboard and a flagpole. Because the prop is dual-bladed, and has a hole which shows the pole running through it, I decided to design the weapon so there was a hole that allowed the pole to sit in it. Then I sandwiched the pole between some more pieces of cardboard, thereby covering up the holes that shouldn't exist and also giving it more of a three-dimensional look. I then applied masking tape to all the edges and covered the gaps. Afterward, I simply painted it all with latex paint and outlined it with a sharpie.
